Matt Lauer on the Today Show on Monday, April 16, 2012 reported that many people are getting chin augmentations. Lauer reported the reason for this rising trend: web cams.

Chin augmentation (also known as chin implant) is a surgical procedure that enhances and defines the chin line.  More chin augmentations than breast augmentations, liposuction and Botox are being done according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The procedure is now popular with both men and women, with nearly 21,000 Americans opting for the operation last year alone, the ASPS reports. A total of 10,593 men had the operation done in 2011, a 76 percent increase over the prior year, and 10,087 women had the procedure, a 66 percent rise for a combined total of 71 percent.

Experts give reasons for the rise in chin implants. Chin augmentations are popular now because people don’t like the way their chins look when they see themselves during video-conferencing and chatting with friends and family members on Skype.

The biggest jump was in people over 40 which is the time people are bridging the gap between youthfulness and middle age. They’re getting loose skin under the jaw line and a chin implant can make an immediate improvement.

People have cameras everywhere; at weddings, concerts, and parties where people take pictures that are posted on Facebook or other places. When people see the shape of their chin, they decide to go for chin augmentation.

Dr. Mehmet Oz told Matt Lauer that chin implant surgery is risky. In fact, there’s a 5-7 percent chance of infection.

It is thought that people with strong chins are good leaders. They cite former Presidents Clinton and Ford and President Obama, all of whom have strong chins. Jennifer Aniston has a strong chin that she was born with. She didn’t need chin augmentation.

Do you think Jay Leno needs a chin implant? (See his photo above).
